Is it Cheaper to Screen than Grind?

Had a guy say its much cheaper to screen than grind the other day.
On the surface, he is correct, but use this for an example:
If you grind 100,000 yards a year and want to screen your material so you only have to grind 50,000 yards a year instead, then your cost of grinding essentially doubles because you are only spreading your annual grinding costs across 50,000 yards instead of 100,000. Plus you have to pay for that screener you bought.
Now its not exactly double, because your fixed costs are what they are no matter how many yards you are grinding, but the cost per yard will increase significantly.
Here's where your cost savings really show:
In a mulch operation for example, if you can use a larger screen regrinding and discharge into a screener to create your ideal product size, you will realize reduced wear costs with the grinder and less color hogging, weight gaining fines in your product.
The screener can scalp out your overs, drop out your fines and produce your perfect product and your cost saving continue to multiply from the grinder through every operation including delivery.
Less wear, color, weight and freight.
Product size quality is improved and your material is lighter, fluffier and has a reduced bulk density.
In addition to mulch, the ability to create the perfect Playground material is realized.
Choose the right screener that can maintain your grinders production rates.
